Common Runner's Injuries

At our chiropractic clinic in Newark, we work with hundreds of people every year struggling with pain and dysfunction related to running. The following are some of the most frequently diagnosed conditions we treat:

  • Achilles Tendonitis: inflammation of the tendon on the back of your ankle
  • Shin Splits: pain on the front of your shins caused by inflammation and damage to the muscles and fascia located there
  • Muscle Strains: micro-tears and inflammation to the muscle fibers (the quadriceps and hamstrings and groin muscles are commonly affected)
  • Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (aka "runner's knee"): inflammation and damage to the cartilage of your knee joint and quadriceps tendon
  • Stress Fractures: small breaks in the bones of your feet

How Injuries Occur

How do these injuries occur? After all, not every runner will experience them even if they log dozens of miles per week! According to research, you may be more at risk for sustaining an exercise-related injury if you:

  • have poor nutrition
  • overtrain (improper rest or repetitive stress) or undertrain ("too much too soon")
  • are overweight
  • use poor body mechanics and/or running technique
  • have improper or ill-fitting shoes
  • have certain physical characteristics (e.g., very wide hips, which can increase the risk of a knee injury)

Even said, virtually any runner can experience a running injury at some point in their lives. Fortunately, these types of acute or chronic musculoskeletal injuries respond quite well to chiropractic care
