Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine has a sideways curvature. Scoliosis generally occurs during a growth spurt, just prior to puberty. Scoliosis affects approximately 3 percent of the population (about 7 million people). Although many cases of scoliosis are mild, for many others, scoliosis can diminish the participation in activities and sports due to the pain, diminished self-esteem and reduction in respiratory function. At Diamond State Chiropractic in we can diagnose and treat scoliosis in children and adults.

Cause of Scoliosis

There are four different types of scoliosis, each of which may have a different cause. Congenital scoliosis is present at birth and generally caused by a bone abnormality. Degenerative scoliosis is caused by a traumatic injury, osteoporosis, a bone deformation or collapse and possibly from a major spinal surgery.  Idiopathic scoliosis (idiopathic means arises without a known causes) is the most common form of scoliosis and often runs in families. Neuromuscular scoliosis is generally seen in people with cerebral palsy or spinal bifida; it’s the result of irregular muscle or nerve formation.

The Symptoms/Pain Commonly Associated With Scoliosis

The symptoms of scoliosis may include waist that is uneven, one hip is noticeably higher than the other, uneven shoulders and/or one shoulder blade that may appear to be more prominent than the other. If the curve worsens, your spine will also twist or rotate in addition to curving to the side, which causes the ribs to stick out further on one side. Common symptoms present in moderate or severe scoliosis may include:

  • Changes with walking
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Trouble breathing
  • Cardiovascular problems
  • Pain and spasms

How Can Chiropractic Care in Newark Help Treat and Manage the Pain?

Chiropractic care in Newark involves non-invasive and pro-active treatments for those with scoliosis. Proper chiropractic adjustments can help to bring the spine back to its normal position, which will help to not only manage, but relieve the pain. Chiropractic adjustments can also help to increase the range of spinal motion and remove the pressure on your nervous system, which in turn will help to manage the pain. Along with spinal adjustments, chiropractic care may include exercises to help strengthen and stabilize the muscles that support and protect your spine.

If you notice any signs or symptoms of scoliosis in you or your child, it is important to visit your family physician as well as your chiropractor as soon as possible. It is important to keep in mind that mild curves in children can develop without the parent being aware of the problem, because they often appear gradually and usually don’t cause pain. So, it is essential to routinely check your child’s back to ensure a curve is not beginning and to schedule regular appointments with their pediatrician who will also check their spine health.
